A film commissioned by Cricoteka Museum in Krakow to coincide with the new iteration of the collection display entitled Vision Therapy curated by Jaroslaw Suchan with Cricoteka team: Natalia Zarzecka, Kamil Kuitkowski, Magdalena Ujma, Małgorzata Paluch-Cybulska.
Filmed at the private apartment and studio shared by the artist Maria Stangret (1929-2020) with her husband Tadeusz Kantor (1915-1990) since 1962 at Spokojna Street in Krakow.
Through an intimate portrait of the Kantors' studio apartment, the film attempts to signal the presence of Maria Stangret - a painter, organiser of everyday life, and someone valued by the community. In the final sequence, we hear her voice uttering the phrase "the impossible becomes possible," which conveys a sense of liberation and affirmation of her independence and agency. It resonates within the interior where the artist has lived 30 years longer than her husband. The film 'archives' a material and spiritual presence of the lives of its long-time but no longer residents. Through patient camera observation by cinematographer Michał Sosna and the creation of an evocative soundtrack by composer Luca Nasciuti, the film encourages reflection and a critical examination of an established reception of Kantor's art.
The resulting film is a consequence of my long-standing interest in the lack of recognition for women's achievements. The contribution of wives and partners is often treated marginally and their merits unfairly attributed to men.
