Learning by Heart/Brecht
A detailed research project that proposes contemporary relevance of several themes found in the works of Bertolt Brecht during his exile in Stockholm in 1938. Far from the desire to reconstruct the evidence of the writer’s presence in the city, the project interrogates the significance of what might be experienced as a political vacuum, withdrawal of radical positions and a pressure to conform known as globalization. Attention is turned to the relationship between practice and its possible effects through event, dissemination and documents.
The project gives recognition to the figure of the amateur as one possessing a different kind of knowledge, not necessarily acquired through academic learning. Making a connection to the amateur theatre, to a grassroots movement, the origin of acting as well as act-ivism we might be able to better place our own activity as artists.
